OUTFIT | PAIN PAIN GO AWAY COME AGAIN ANOTHER DAY

I'm having a little hard time with life at the moment.
I started feeling down in January but thought it was just jet-lag, hormones, winter, whatever. And then I had this massive nosebleed in Istanbul when my sister was sleeping and I thought "oh, so anemia is back, that's why I've been feeling down". But it clearly wasn't just that. Followed a marathon of shifts, mostly overnight that left me completely drained. Winter was still there so this meant I barely saw light of day for a week and I paid the price for it. My circadian cycle was all over the place, I was so sleep deprived, my body didn't understand when was a good time to eat so I was on a two-meals-a-day diet, hungry all the time except when I actually had food in front of me. And then boom, my periods hit for the second time in three weeks. Something is wrong. My hormones are all over the place. And when hormones are all over the place, it shows up there. And things that shouldn't necessarily trigger me did: friends having dark thoughts needing help, podcasts about sexual assault, conflict with colleagues... And now I'm down. I have not been in such a dark place in more than a year. I made SO MUCH progress last year with dealing with my depression - even though social anxiety peaked as a result - but I feel like now is the right time after 5 years to make an appointment with my therapist. I feel like I am now ready to open up to her more than I ever did and finally fix the issue that's been killing me slowly for twenty years.

I know there are a lot of pictures and I always hated when bloggers did that but I need to be feeling myself at the moment.
Also look at my amazing brows. I went to the salon and the lady completely messed them up but I fixed them with my Benefit product.
Thank goodness for makeup sometimes tbh.

LOOKBOOK METALLIC LOVER

Every year, I write in here that I want to switch things up a bit and be more present on YouTube. I guess that's it. It's my first ever lookbook and it's the first blog post of the year. I've been working hard on it and it would mean the world to me if you could just click on it even if you don't like it and close it after a few seconds. I just need your feedback and your support.

Here's the sum up of 2018:
January: My grandfather unexpectedly passed away in early December. January was pretty tough because I was all by myself in London dealing with this. And by "all by myself" I really mean it. My family was in Paris, staying strong together; my friends went completely silent radio on me, no message of support, no calls, no nothing; I was having a tough time at work with my agressive boss and my housemate was still being extremely rude to me. I couldn't see the end of January...

February: I was laid off my job - they decided not to renew my contract, probably because me and my boss were all at war (and also because I sucked at this job to be honest). But thank goodness during that period, my dear friend Justine came to visit me and we went to Brighton. It felt good. It was the last time we saw each other before...

March: ... Miami ! See, when we say "God has a plan" He really has. If we didn't plan this trip months ago, I would've stayed in London, crying over losing my job and worrying about what next. Instead, we flew to Florida, went to the Bahamas, road tripped across the Sunshine state and completely deconnected (I might have posted a pic or two on Instagram haha). It was exactly what I needed, when I needed it.

April: I started training for this new job, but wasn't sure where that was going so I moved back to Paris mid-April. We buried my grand-father on my birthday.

May: And the following weekend, my most supportive friends (minus one but she was busy) drove to my country side house to celebrate my birthday. I was still a bit shaky following the burial but it was very nice to have them around and soak up the sun in laughter. I will never forget that they came, even if it was a long way, even if it did not sound like the best weekend ever.
Who knew that age 26 I will still learn a lesson on friendship and betrayal? Well, I still learned the hard way after my grand-father's passing that sometimes you can give EVERYTHING to you friends, be there for them during tough times, they will not necessarily be there for you when something terrible happens. So yes, my friends were still completely silent, except one. But I also learned a big lesson on loyalty on the first week of May and I have to admit that I am still really struggling with what happened. But hey yay I got the job and moved back to London !

June: I moved to a new house, not in my favorite neighborhood but hey, London's housing market is cray. The housemates were terrible - again - and it was freaking hot and loud in there ! I tried not to be disappointed and tried to see my friends as much as possible. I also started listening to all the ChristChurch London's podcasts on my iPhone. The rest was work work work work work work work...

July: World Cup ! All I can remember is night shifts, weekend shifts and world cup games ! Also, I remember the heat in London and how I did not shave because all I did was work sleep eat repeat, so it was a nightmare being in jeans in 35 degrees. Dammit patriarchy !

August: More World Cup and the big victory ! Woohoo ! I also got Kanye West'd by someone who thought it was clever to tell me that my anxiety and clinically diagnosed depression was a "choice" but hey France won the World Cup so suck it !

September: I moved back to East London, with grown ass men who did not know anything about cleaning and energy saving. Needless to say after a week I knew I'd need to move out - again. But I was closer to church and Syana and all the cool spots.  I started a new job as well ! #GodProvides

October: My sister moved to the US and left me on the other side of the pond ! My new job turned out to be trickier for my mental wellbeing than I thought but as Avril Lavigne says "God keep my head above water !".

November: Moved into a new house share with cool housemates - not in my favorite part of London but that will do. Started watching Buffy again. Otherwise it was just me being busy with work.

December: I went back to Paris to see Michelle Obama but she cancelled on us because Bush senior died. So I got to spend some quality time with my family. And then it was Christmas, and then I flew to New York to be with my sis ! I also finished listening to all the podcasts available from my church on the podcast thing of the iPhone.

So yeah, the beginning of the year was pretty intense and tough but in the end, I tried to let go and just keep moving forward. I do not want to set goals. I just think I need to work on myself to let go of grudges I keep that keep pulling me back. I also need to let go of people, even if we had amazing years together, I don't need to have these years holding me back from cutting them off. And that will be the most difficult part, but I think it's time for me to look for a new church. The sense of belonging I had when I joined back in 2014 is fading, I now struggle each time a bit more with social anxiety when I go because I feel rejected. Let's see how this goes...

OUTFIT | JUNGLE

The world outside is a jungle and I am the weakest creature of the animal kingdom.
I can't take any decision by myself - including life changing ones.
For as long as I can remember, I hid behind my sister for such decisions.
She's the King Kong of the jungle - understand determined, wise but quick-tempered, sometimes a bully.
I can't say "no" for shit and it got me in really tough/awkward situations.
I hate myself for being the one who always tries to please everyone even if it means basically hurting myself.
I am being eaten alive in this jungle.
Being so weak is really crippling when you're working in my field. It is even worse when you're a blogger.
I never say to people they take shitty pictures of me because I do not to hurt them, but in the end, I'm paying the price for it because I post shitty pictures here and on social media.
In the blogging universe, you have to be a lion, ready to fight and conquer, and eat alive any concurrence.
If you're a sloth like me, you're not going anywhere.
I feel like I like trapping myself in this engrenage where I pick jobs where basically I'm going to suffer and suck.
Thank God for my sister, for Syana, Anoushka and Oriane who bear with me when I'm just a piece of shit in this jungle.

LIFESTYLE | I DID NOT SHAVE FOR 6 MONTHS

I did not shave my armpits for six months. Some may think it’s because I want to become the ultimate feminist, the one who does not shave and holds signs up in demonstrations. Well, not at all.
Ever since the Nike Paris Centre race mid-October, I did not shave. It all went super naturally. I was moving to London, starting a new job which got me pretty anxious, I could not care less about shaving my armpits. Even though for me it was not something super time consuming: I am one of these girls who just quickly shave their armpits every 48 hours under the shower. But this time, I was just like « who cares ? ». My way of thinking was « I do not know anyone here, I don’t particularly plan on going out, it is freezing, I am always wearing long sleeves so fuck it ».
Especially since I noticed that it took my hair more time to grow back and it was less dense. So I thought not shaving will give my body time to heal - we all know that shaving is pretty agressive and traumatizing for the skin.
Then opportunities to go out came up, it was really tempting to shave but I found it funny to figure out outfit ideas, a little bit more « modest », less revealing (yeah, I’m a nun now) but still cool so I did not shave and here we are six months later.

Then why did I decide to « come out » on International Woman’s Day ? Did what was my personal decision at first turn into a feminist revendication ? A little bit, yes. I figured three main lines of thinking out of everyday life moments. I can’t count how many times we’re having girl talk you know, boys, periods, body hair and the same old song comes on: « but you don’t have to care about shaving, you don’t have a boyfriend », « I need to wax I have a date », « you don’t shave anymore and he does not say anything ? He’s not bothered ? Are you not scared he might leave you? », « ugh it’s gross », « you’re letting yourself go »…

Bodyhair and beauty standards

« ugh it’s gross », « you’re letting yourself go ».
How many times did we link taking our hair off, which means happily ripping our hair in excruciating pain our shaving and hurting our skin at the risk of accidentally cutting ourselves and bleed for hours, to taking care of ourselves ? I do myself, every time I take the time to remove my hair it is always part of a « me-day » you know, face mask, hair mask, epilator.
Analyze commercials, it is all about women in a « cocooning-look-at-me-taking-care-of-myself-in-a-pink-and-white-bathroom-or-by-a-pool-on-holidays » mode. I’m so fed up with these ads ! It’s like ads for feminine hygiene products (but that’s another topic for a different blogpost).
We are being sold beauty products by being advertised that this is for our own good. But it is actually not, body hair are there to protect sensitive areas of our bodies (eyebrows and eyelashes are here to protect - guess - our eyes, nose hair are here to protect our nasal mucosa, pubic hair are here to protect our vaginas (there, I said the V word)).
These beauty standards are moreover so fucked up and revealing about ouf messed up borderline pedophile society because hey they are basically saying women are only beautiful when they look like hairless babies. So much for protesting against the sexualisation of children (hi there Stranger Kids !).
Finally, ô the double standards ! Men, keep your body hair, it is manly, it is sexy, no problem ! Hygiene? Beauty ? Who cares, body hair is only filthy and disgusting on women. Here’s my example: my way of thinking when I decided not to shave anymore was « I do not know anyone here, I don’t particularly plan on going out ». I was very conscious that I was about to hide in my bedroom and there were little chances of me exposing to the rest of the world my disgusting body hair, the decision was easy to make. You should have seen the look on my mom’s face when I showed her my armpit hair two weeks ago ! I make a face as well when I see hairy women - because I also assimilated the fact that hair on women = disgusting. I was super anxious when I went to a massage appointment with my fully grown hair two weeks ago, even more when I found out the masseuse was a man. I am no exception to the rule.
I just want to mention Black and Asian women who have to deal with euro-centric beauty standards that put them sometimes in dangerous positions (hair straightening, skin bleaching, cosmetic surgery) but also have to deal with injunctions on their female bodies.
You know where you can put your beauty standards.

». CQFD.

Body hair and the relationship with men

The time has come to trash talk a little bit more on our society, and the patriarchy (I can see you rolling your eyes). Men have power over women, women are in position of inferiority - in submission - and unconsciously judge themselves, measure themselves through the eyes of men. Ô happy life.
Unconsciously, we are always bending to what men expect from us. We have to be good looking and sexy, always ready to sexually satisfy them. And by ready, I mean among other things: be hairless. « I need to wax I have a date », « you don’t shave anymore and he does not say anything ? He’s not bothered ? Are you not scared he might leave you? ». There you have it.
I have a vivid memory of having this conversation, I can literally hear the voice of the one who said these words. My eyes rolled so hard I saw the back of my skull. « HE does not say anything, HE is not bothered ». We are talking about a woman’s hair here, her own body, her personal decision. How on Earth - especially as these two ladies are close friends - can one shame another woman for not doing something to HER body just because it might upset a man ? Am I the only one pissed off here ?

Body hair and the single status

We live in a sexually charged society, sex sells, sex is being consumed at high speed rate, we are being judged by how sexy we are and how much sex we get. We are being taught to maintain this sex status, this sexual persona. So we have to remove our hair. Because if we keep our hair, it means that we are not having sex so we are single. « but you don’t have to care about shaving, you don’t have a boyfriend ». There you have it.
Put the puzzle pieces back together: men want hairless women, mainly because it is « good looking » and it arouses him. If women do not bend to this then they are de facto single. Being single - or gay because these beauty standards were created by men FOR men. Being single and moreover not being sexually active is not really interesting in our society of appearances, social media, Instagram, in our hyper-sexualized culture.

I know that talking about body hair to people is a little bit embarrassing. Syana is done with my hair issues when we have to shoot and I didn’t remove the hair on my legs. Anoushka calls it « the Chewbakance » and it tones everything down. It is just hair. I walk around in my house with my hairy legs and my brother or my father can not care less. I saw bearded women in Rihanna videos or in The Greatest Showman and I was moved because I spend so much time bleaching my upper lip hair. I saw a lady at the Reclaim Our Night protest in London walking around with magnificent long blond hair on her legs, she was gorgeous. I am clearly not there yet, you know, showing the middle finger to my body insecurities that were created by society. Call me a hypocrite because I am about to shave my beloved armpit hair to go to Florida in a couple of days. It breaks my heart to remove them because I learnt to love them and watched them grow like my own little babies. But this is an experience I am glad I made and that I will surely renew. I hope my broken English and unorganized thoughts will be fruitful in your heads. I know it might seem like it is not topical, not the right battle to fight at the moment (I read so many comments from dumb people online when racism, afro hair or blackface is being discussed that I know the rhetoric now) but like the fight against racism, freeing our hair might be the first step leading to "more serious" fights, freeing our body hair might be too.

10 QUESTIONS TO REFLECT ON THE LAST YEAR

I watched Zoe's video with this tag on and decided to give it a go.

1. Where were you this time last year?

This time last year I started working on a big professional project. At the time, I was very happy that my former boss called me to join this very interesting project, I was grateful that I did not even had to look for a job and that I wouldn't have to worry for the next six months. We also had a wonderful news in the family, everyone was excited and genuinely happy.

2. Where are you now?

I am now in London after crying myself to bed for years because I was sad I left the city. I am not as happy as I was last year. The year was tough, the project I worked on drained my energy and left me emotionally vulnerable. Leaving Paris for London in fall was a fresh start but turned into a nightmare. I am only beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope everything will be fine in the end. Even though it might mean me going back to Paris.

3. If you could describe the year in three words, what would they be?

As I mentioned earlier, 2017 was tough. It was not completely bad or overwhelmingly good. It was tough. It was enlightening as at age 25 again I got to open my eyes on fake friends and negative people - including family - in my life. I guess this shit never stops. I guess I'll get disappointed by people again in the future. I thought me cutting people out of my life at the first mistake would enable me to keep only the good relationships in my life. But sometimes even these turn sour and that I learnt this year. But on a good note, this year was fun. I got to do stuff outside of my comfort zone, like being a supervisor for teenagers on a ski trip abroad, I backpacked through Bolivia, drank too many tequila shots and spoke Spanish in Barcelona, interviewed people and grow through their stories, learned more about Paris, took over Asos snapchat account for a day, went to Lollapalooza, went on holidays with the fam which did not happen in years, spent hours on Tumblr to send funny stuff to my partner in crime... It was fun. Tough but fun. I would add also that it was pretty quiet. I allowed myself to turn down social gatherings if I did not feel like it and it was amazing. I kind of turned into a grandma, just doing my thing in my bedroom, watching movies, playing The Sims, listening to music and now and then meet up with my hometown friends for wine and cheese. I liked that.

4. What are you grateful for?

I am grateful for work. When I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a journalist, I knew it was part of the deal that I might end up unemployed. But thank God, I've never been in-between jobs for too long - just long enough to go on holidays and play the Sims. And if moving to London is part of the job then it's a dream come true.

5. What goals did you accomplish?

I would say move back to London. It was not something I specifically set up for 2017 but still something that has been on my mind for YEARS. Ever since I left pretty much. Otherwise all the other goals I set up for 2017 failed miserably

6. What goals did you not accomplish?

I did not reach my secret goal to get 5K followers on IG by the 31st of December. That's my biggest disappointment because to be honest I was really close. But then with all the changes in my life in late 2017, I did not had time to post or engage on Instagram anymore. And I did not want to. I was completely confused and rejected social media and its tiring concept of having a perfect life, a perfect house, a perfect job, a perfect lunch, a perfect boyfriend, a perfect dog, a perfect body,  a perfect social life... So I kind of disconnected and then not reached my 5K goal.

7. What brought the most joy in 2017?

8. What new habits have you acquired?

I am not really a girl who has habits.

9. What old habits are you leaving?

See question 8.

10. What do you want to achieve in 2018?

I did not set myself goals to reach in 2018. I am not good at fulfilling them. I just want to keep doing my thing, being a grandma and carefully selecting the people I allow in my life.

Feel free to use the tag and share your thoughts with me !

OUTFIT | EVERYTHING THAT SHINES AIN'T ALWAYS GONNA BE GOLD

"I'm on the pursuit of happiness"... Who isn't? There is not a single day I do not ask myself "are you truly happy?". The alternative to this question is "how much do you want to kill yourself today?". It is no longer a secret - I have talked about it many times on my blog - I have been struggling with depression and suicidal tendencies for more than ten years. I now deal with these illnesses way better than few years ago but still, everyday, I have this little voice in my head telling me "you're not happy, you can go anywhere, you'll never be happy, you're always going to be sad and depressed so you might as well end it now".
I attended a couple of months ago a screening of the film "Get Out" followed by a Q&A with various people from the film industry with an activist background ie everything I love. We discussed the "sunken place" represented in the film. How sometimes, something triggers us and lets us sink in our very own "sunken place". It was eye opening to me. How everyday I let myself sink in the "sunken place". Usually my own thoughts drag me down there but more often social interactions trigger me as well. I can't remember the number of times I simply blacked out during a conversation because someone innocently said something that made me feel like shit. Social interactions are the worst. People are no longer honest with each other. It is now a big mascarade where everyone just pretend they're living the best life, are happy in every single aspect of your life. Everyone is competing to be the one having the most perfect life. And I'm just standing there feeling like shit. Even though I know this is all fake and pretending, I still feel like shit. Even though I know my life is not the worst, I still feel like shit. I am very lucid on all of this and I still feel like shit. I am trapped in my "sunken place". But I ain't buying all the fairy dust that people are throwing to make there life seem more appealing than it truly is. I am pretty confident in the fact that we are all trapped in our very own "sunken places". We are all on the pursuit of happiness.

3 BASED ON A TRUE STORY FILMS FOR TODAY'S ISSUES

As the world is going nuts, I think it is a good thing to look back and remind ourselves of the lessons History taught us. If you're not into history books and documentaries, I would advise to prepare yourself a hot cocoa, grab a box of tissues and watch these films.

The Way Back

"Refugees". Nowadays, only mentioning this word in a social gathering can spark debates that may end up in fist fights (not talking from experience). Everyone talks about politics, diplomacy, laws, protectionism, nationalism, fear and worse. But let's just pause for a moment and think. Let's juxtapose "life and death situation" to the word "refugee". Reflect for a minute on what you would do if your world started falling appart and the only hope for you and your loved ones to stay alive was to flee.
I felt compassion while watching this film as well as admiration. These people are so brave for doing what they're doing. They are going through things they would not go through if their lives really were not at threat.
Funny how this all-white-casting film is moving and the world just keeps shrugging when brown people from Middle-East and Africa keep dying in the Mediterranean sea. Just saying.

La Rafle

I only want to say: this is what happens when you want to create a database of people from a specific religion, or ban them.
This film got me in tears for nearly half an hour after it finished. I never cry watching movies (well, I cried watching "Requiem For A Dream" and "The Help"), I usually manage to hold my tears. But at some point by the end of the film, I burst into tears and only managed to calm down way after the ending credits ended. I was just there, sitting on my bed, wondering where the world's madness come from.

12 years a slave

I find it funny how Black people learn more about their history from Hollywood flicks than from study books. I find it funny that these films are written by White people. I find it funny that even with more films about that matter, people still don't understand why Black people demande reparations. I find it funny that people still think racism is made up.

LIFESTYLE | 2017 EXPECTATIONS

Download Festival

You have no idea how excited about the 2017 edition of Download Festival in France. There will be Green Day as well, and if the line-up is similar to the British version of the festival, I might just go freakin' nuts ! I know Aerosmith won't play - too bad - because they're headlining the Hellfest as their only France date. But I still have hope that Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Crown The Empire, Rob Zombie and last but not freakin' least AFI will join the french line-up ! I've been waiting for 10+ years to see AFI live, I might just go to the original Download Festival if they're not coming to France ! That's how rock'n'roll I am !

Travel

2016 was rich in terms of travel. It kicked off with an impromptu travel to Milan and Venice, then Rome in August and finally my road trip through California in October. I am already thinking about going skiing in Austria and maybe visit friends in New Zealand or backpack through Asia. The world is full of possibilities !

25th anniversary

I am turning 25 on April 29th. If feel very very bad about it. I feel like the last ten years went by and I did not see it. I miss being young, wild and free hangover-proof. But I am glad my best friends stayed by my side through all these years and I am looking forwards to celebrate this milestone with them. Maybe in my countryside house, maybe in a bar in Paris, maybe brunching at my Dad's like grown-ups do. I just feel blessed for being alive, loved and successful in some way.
Je vais avoir 25 ans le 29 avril. Je me sens terriblement mal.

What are you looking forward to in 2017 ?
Quelles sont vos attentes de 2017 ?

2016 FAVOURITE BLOGGERS

LEANNE WOODFULL - THUNDER & THREADS

Besides being in love with her style, Leanne Woodfull won my heart at being a mindful blogger. I noticed how last year, during the Paris attacks, she just stopped posting "blogger stuff" on Instagram and said she won't because she's mourning and supporting French people. And she does it all the time. She's not just about blogging, clothes and make-up. She tweets about Aleppo, Trump, feminism, geopolitics, racismmental health... She's been bullied online for being vocal about rape culture and mental illness, and I will always stand by her side. She cares about real stuff. I like that she's connected to the real world. That makes a huge difference for me.

AIMEE SONG - SONG OF STYLE

Following Aimee Song on Snapchat/Instastory was game-changer. I discovered that not only Aimee was an avocado addict and a food lover like me as well as a Kendrick Lamar fan, she is open-handed as well. She gathered personal hygiene products for the homeless on Thanksgiving and handed them out herself, she was vocal about Trump, racism and the Standing Rock protest (retweeting many times Bernie Sanders), she raised money to provide 1,000 people with clean water in India, she is packing warm clothes to hand out to the homeless for Christmas... I love how she lives life to the fullest, she's funny and passes on happiness through her smile, laugh, friends and family we get to see on social media. Keep doing that Aimee, we need it.

It was kind of obvious that at some point Shenae Grimes Beech - whom I already confessed my styling-crush on - would turn to blogging. And she finally did it this year ! I like how her blog is part fashion, part DIY posts, part food and last but not least part "domestic bliss" as she calls it. It makes me wish I was in a long term relationship doing all these stuff to spice up my love life/domestic life ! You sure want to check out her blog !

LIFESTYLE | WHY I STOPPED USING DEODORANT

When I moved back to France in October 2015, I simply stopped putting on deodorant. Here's why.

WHY I STOPPED WEARING DEODORANT

There was so many bad reports on the effects of deodorant - especially aluminum salts - it started growing on me. Aluminum salts are linked to breast cancer. I think that nowadays, if you're not already prediposed to having cancer, everything can trigger it. But I think we should do our best to prevent developping cancers. First, I stopped using deodorants containing aluminum salts. Then, I gradually started to use organic, vegan and cruelty-free deodorants. I was fine with it at first but then I noticed they were not really efficient and for some, I had to re-apply them twice a day or more. I randomly read papers about how in fact our bodies regulate sweat - and smell - and all the products we've been using since day 1 are to blame. So I wanted to carry a little experiment and I stopped using deodorant.

MON EXPERIENCE SANS DEODORANT

MY EXPERIMENT WITHOUT DEODORANT

For the first weeks and months, I did not use anything. And I noticed some funny stuff. I was clearly sweating less. It took me running for my bus for me to start sweating. But my armpits were still pretty dry even when it was hot. Only stress made me lose control. Then, it is a bit hross, but as I read: what we eat really impacts our body smell. I remember it hit me after a night out, I was hungover and sweating like a pig and I clearly smelt like beer. Sexy right ? It was the same when I ate spicy food etc. Then I also realised that the frabic of the clothes we wear for some activate sweat. Viscose, acrylic and polyester tops are really to ban, and so are in general all synthetic materials. There is nothing better than a cotton or wool top or sweater !

MES CONCLUSIONS

MY CONCLUSIONS

My experiment lasted about two months. In early 2016, I started applying essential oils mixed with coconut oil and a bit of baking soda on my armpits and voilà. I just started again using industrial deodorant from Yves Rocher, and it clearly does not work. I smell. Bad. So it convinces me even more that industrial deodorants are really fucking up with what our bodies are already meant to do naturally.

Do you plan on giving up deodorant ?
