TRAVEL | CORNWALL - PENZANCE

I was in charge of the travel section of my school's magazine. As you may know, I'm a traveller. And as I was new in the UK, I though it would be a good pretext to travel if I was in charge of the travel section. I thought a lot about finding a great subject to write on for the mag. First, I wanted to do something about water places in the UK. Because I love water places. Then it hit me up: I wanted to do something about places in the UK where you feel like you're not in the UK (do you feel me?). And Cornwall - yet a least Penzance and Porthcruno - is all about that.

I went there because I read online that there was an open-air greco-roman inspired theatre there. And also a replica of the very French Mont Saint Michel - which has the same name : St Michael's Mount. That was enough for me: antic Greece and Normandy in the same area, I'M IN. Well, that was until I checked the train fares to get there. It was almost £200. Just for the train ! So I decided instead to be brave and do a 9h bus ride down to Penzance. It was way cheaper, and I already did a 22h bus ride to Budapest last summer so it was pretty easy. I booked a bed in a lovely hostel not far from the city center. The staff was really lovely, and the breakfast was included. I ended up having the room for myself so it was pretty interesting for £15 the night.

As I arrived in Penzance around 8am, and I could only check-in at 10am, I decided to try and go there to see if I could quickly drop my stuff and maybe brush my teeth - after a 9hour bus ride, hygiene is important. The woman at the desk was really understanding and helpful. She opened my room earlier for me and let me settle down. I then made my way back to the city center and checked the bus schedule. There were about 4 buses a day to go to the Minack Theatre and St Michael's Mount. I started fearing that I won't have time in 24hours to see everything. But, I did it because I'm a warrior.

Waiting for the bus which would take me to the Minack Theatre, I had a typical English breakfast - veggie option - in a chip van. Everyone was starring at me as I was trying to be discrete quietly reading an article on Ricardo Villalobos in Cracks magazine. Apparently, in that small town of Penzance, nobody ever heard of Ricardo Villalobos, Cracks magazine or seen a vegetarian mixed race French girl. It was pretty funny because everyone knew each other in there. Everytime someone entered the van, there was a round of handshakes, cheerings and personal questions. It warmed my heart to see that finally there was a place on Earth where people still knew and cared about each others. But I had to leave to take my bus.

Even though I was exhausted because of the 9hours bus ride, I couldn't sleep in the bus to the Minack theatre. I was so lucky because it was actually winter and the weather was perfect. It was sunny and warm with no clouds in the sky. As the bus made its way through the hills, I had a perfect view on the coast and even spotted St Michael's Mount a few miles away. I wasn't the only tourist there so we acknowledged each other and all felt happy to be there. The road was so tiny it sometimes felt the bus would never be able to make his way. We went through deep dark woods which would have been the perfect set for a horror movie. These woods led to typical British country side with green fields. I was wondering if I took the right bus as we were in the middle of nowhere. And then I saw the cliff.

That was the last top. Everyone then had to hike our way up to the theatre. I couldn't believe my eyes. The sun was reflecting on the sea and blinding me. The sea was turquoise and the waves were crushing on the rocks. The horizon was mixing with the blue of the sea. I felt so small and meaningless. But so thankful to be there to witness it.

The Minack theatre is built on the cliff fronting the sea. After paying around £6, I was allowed to make my way through the small museum explaining the origins of the theatre. Then I could finally enter the theatre. It wasn't as impressive as I thought, mainly because of the works. But the view was still breathtaking. After taking a few bad pictures for the magazine, I made my way to the beach. There was a trail through the rocks on the cliff, at some places it was really sharp and dangerous but I made it with no scars.

The beach was a Caribean-like beach, with thin sand and turquoise water. It was midday so the sun was hitting pretty bad. Some spanish people were having a picnic in the beach and one of them was soaking wet because she fell in the sea. I mentally made fun of her and then it happened to me. Karma is a bitch. But the sun dried me up in no time. I then took a nap in the gravel waiting for the 2pm bus.

Back to the town center, I took another bus that would take me to St Michael's Mount. The weather became a bit more colder and cloudy. It rained at some point but I was determined to go there. I was freezing because I was tired and hungry. But I had to do it. I never went to the french Mont Saint Michel so it was the first time I experienced the magic of tide. I saw the path to the mount coming out of the water and then walked on it. It was actually pretty funny. Unfortunately, the castle was closed so I just walked around and went back to the main land.

Back to the hostel, I took a shower that felt like the best thing ever and napped again before going back to the town center to buy pizzas. I then fell into deep coma to get physically prepared for the 9h bus ride back to London the next day.

I truly recommend to anyone visiting or living in the UK to visit Cornwall. It's full of wonders and memorable landscapes. There's really no tourist so you can really feel that it's a precious special moment. I don't regret going there on my own. It felt like I was priviledged and living something exceptional. It is also rather cheap. Buses cost me around £10 for the day. I spent around £20 on food for two meals ( around £5 for the breakfast in the van and around £15 at Domino's pizza). YMCA cost me about £15 and the entry the the Minack theatre less than £10 pounds. If you book your train or bus early it's cheaper so do not say that it's pricy. There's no excuse not to go to Cornwall.
