TRAVEL | WEEKEND IN ROME

Pour le week-end du 15 août avec ma meilleure amie, nous sommes parties à Rome. Je vous ai fait une petite vidéo pour l'occasion.

On the 15th of August week-end, I flew to Rome with my bestie. Here is the short video I made.

J'ai réservé mon avion via Kayak, c'est un site que j'utilise quasiment tout le temps. J'utilise parfois aussi misterfly. J'ai voyagé avec Air France opéré par Alitalia. Départ Orly, retour Roissy - Charles De Gaulle. Il y a entre 1h30 et 2h de vol.

I booked my flight on Kayak. It is a website I use most of the time. I sometimes use as well misterfly. I travelled with Air France, the flight was operated by Air Italia. The flight is about 1h30-2h long.

Avec ma pote on a longuement hésité. Il y avait une offre sympa hôtel + petit dejeuner + vol compris sur vente-privée, mais vu que ma pote a des billets d'avion moins cher avec Air France nous n'avons pas pris cette formule (et j'ai payé mon billet d'avion 50€ plus cher..) Nous avons donc pris un Air BnB près de la gare de Termini. C'est pas le quartier le plus glamour de Rome, il y a pas mal de SDF, mais notre appart était vraiment canon. Après, je ne suis pas une fan de Air BnB, parce qu'en bonne tarée, je trouve ça inadmissible qu'ils ne paient quasiment aucun impôt en France donc je boycott un peu...

We booked a Air BnB flat nearby the Termini station. It is not the most glamorous neighborhood in Rome, there are a lot of homeless people, but our flat was really cool. However, I am not a Air BnB fan as I find it pretty outrageous that the company pays almost no taxes in France so I am kind of boycotting them...

Le Vatican, la Basilique Saint Pierre et le château Saint-Ange

Vatican, Saint Peter's Basilica and Castel San'Angelo

Le premier jour, nous sommes allées aux musées du Vatican. Et clairement, nous n'étions pas prête. Nous pensions que cette visite allait nous permettre d'avoir accès à la Basilique Saint Pierre. Pas du tout. On a passé 4h à tourner dans ce musée qui est fait comme Ikéa - une fois dedans, tu dois faire le tour si tu veux en sortir - et nous ne sommes pas des grandes fans d'art. C'était sympa au début mais après... Quoi qu'il en soit, le point culminant de la visite, quasiment tout à la fin, c'est de pouvoir voir (et ne pas prendre en photo) dans la Chapelle Sixtine les travaux de Michel Ange dont la Création d'Adam. On a failli le louper tellement la fresque est en réalité toute petite, quasiment introuvable sur cet immense plafond.

Nous avons ensuite fait le tour de la citadelle pour pouvoir entrer dans la cour de la Basilique Saint Pierre que nous avons ensuite visité, sans monter au toit parce que nous étions fauchée exténuée. Dans la Basilique Saint Pierre se trouve la tombe du Pape Jean Paul II.

En sortant de la Basilique Saint Pierre, nous sommes allées en face au Castel Sant'Angelo avec une super vue sur le Vatican et Rome. Ca ne coûtait que 5€ il me semble, et ça valait carrément l'occasion.

On day 1, we visited the Vatican museums. And we were not prepared at all. We thought the visit would enable us to access Saint Peter Basilica but not at all. We spent about four hours wandering around this museum thought like Ikea - once you're in, you signed up foe the whole tour, and can't get out - and we are not fond of art. It was nice at the beginning but then... Anyway, almost at the end of the tour, we got to see Michelangelo's works in the Sistine Chapel, including the famous painting The Creation of Adam. We almost did not notice it as the ceiling is huge and this part of the fresco pretty small.
We then went around the fortress to enter the Saint Peter Basilica which we then visited. We did not go up to the roof because we were broke tired. The Pope John Paul II tomb is there.
After visiting the Saint Peter Basilica, we crossed the street to the Castel Sant'Angelo. The entrance fees are about 5€ and you can go to the top to see the wonderful view on Rome and the Vatican.

Le Forum, le Palatin, le Colisée et la Fontaine de Trevi

The Forum, the Palatin, the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain

Le deuxième jour, nous avions réservé notre visite du Forum, du Palatin et du Colisée. Il y avait une immense queue pour le Colisée et un garde nous a conseillé de commencer par le Forum et le Palatin puis de revenir plus tard au Colisée pour qu'il y ait moins de monde. Nous avons fait la queue une heure en plein soleil mais j'étais tellement excitée que je gardais le moral. Le Forum et le Palatin, c'est assez impressionnant. Je n'arrêtais pas de dire à ma pote que j'aimerais bien moi aussi pouvoir créer des trucs qui serait encore debout des siècles plus tard. La civilisation romaine était vraiment super ingénieuse. Ma pote trouvait que c'était beaucoup de ruines, moi je trouvais ça assez fantastique de se dire que c'était peut être des ruines mais quel formidable témoignage du passé !
Le Colisée m'a plus déçu. J'étais persuadée de voir une véritable arène à l'intérieur alors qu'en vérité pour le coup ce ne sont que des ruines. Mais les informations du Routard de ma pote, de Wikipédia et des plaques dans l'édifice m'ont permis de mieux me rendre compte de ce qui s'y passait.
Nous avons ensuite pris la direction de la Fontaine de Trevi. J'étais aussi un peu déçue parce que je l'imaginais bien plus colossale. Quand nous y sommes allées le premier jour, la nuit tombait et mon appareil n'arrivait pas à faire la mise au point sur mon visage. D'autant plus que ma pote perdait patience et qu'il y avait énormément de monde. Nous y sommes revenues le lendemain, assez tôt pour ne pas être en contre-jour et j'ai eu ma photo de touriste avec la Fontaine de Trevi. C'est ça de moins sur ma bucket list !

On day 2, we visited the Forum, the Palatin and the Colosseum as we booked our tickets in advance. The line was huge for the Coliseum so a guard advised us to start with the Forum and the Palatin and then come back later for the Coliseum. We queued an hour in the sun but I was so excited, I kept my chin up ! The Forum and the Palatin are pretty impressive. I couldn't help but tell my friend I would love myself as well to create stuff that would still be up centuries later. The Roman civilisation was pretty ingenious. Well, my friend kept saying it was just all ruins but I found it fantastic. It may be ruins but it is also a wonderful legacy from the past !
The Colosseum a bit disapointed me. I thought I would see a real arena inside whereas in fact, this time for reals, it is just ruins. But thanks to the Routard, Wikipedia and information inside the Colosseum, we got to understand and imagine better what was going down in this building.
Then we headed to the Trevi Fountain. I was a bit disapointed as well as I thought it would be much bigger. We went there at sunset and my camera couldn't focus on my face. My friend was losing patience and it was crowded af. So we came back the following day, early enough to avoid backlight and I got my perfect tourist photo with the Trevi Fountain. This is off my bucketlist !

Le dernier jour nous avons rejoins un ami qui connaît un peu la ville et nous a fait faire un tour.

Mon conseil pour un week-end à Rome: réservez ! Il y a énormément de monde à Rome, pour éviter de faire la queue pendant des heures, pensez à réserver en avance les entrées pour les monuments que vous souhaitez visiter. Il y a aussi le Roma Pass qui vous permet de visiter plusieurs monuments et d'avoir accès aux transports. Nous n'avons pris le métro que deux fois et fait le reste à pied. A vous de voir si vous vous en sentez capable. Renseignez-vous aussi sur des lieux sympas où manger. J'ai suivi les indications de Foursquare mais clairement nous avons mangé plus d'une fois dans des attrapes touristes !

On the last day, we met up with a friend who knew the city and showed us around.

My advice for a succesful week-end in Rome: book in advance ! Rome is really crowded, so think of booking tickets online to avoid massive lines at the entrance of monuments. The Roma Pass enables you to visit several monuments and to have free access to the public transportation. We only took the metro twice and did the rest by foot. It is up to you to figure what you need. Look out for good places to eat. I found restaurants on Foursquare but clearly we ate more than once in touristic places.

Rome était sur ma bucketlist. J'y retournerai sûrement car je n'ai pas vu tout ce que je souhaitais visiter. Dieu merci il a fait un temps superbe, c'était exactement ce dont j'avais besoin, un break rapide au milieu de mon stage pour charger un peu les batteries. Rome se fait très bien en 2-3 jours pour voir le principal. Une semaine aurait été peut être un peu long, je pense qu'en 5 jours j'aurais vu tout ce que je souhaitais.
J'aimerais beaucoup retourner en Egypte et visiter Athènes pour me prendre une petite gifle et me rendre compte que mes problèmes sont insignifiants devant les vestiges de ces civilisations passées.

Rome was on my bucketlist and I'll probably come back as I did not see everything I wanted to visit. Thank God, the weather was fantastic. It really was what I needed: a quick getaway during my internship to fill up my batteries ! You can see most of Rome within 2-3 days. One week would have been too long I think, but in 5 days I guess I would have seen everything I wanted.
I would love to go back to Egypt and visit Greece just as a reminder that my life is insignificant comparing to the vestiges from past civilisations.
